Megaformer vs Reformer Pilates: What's the Difference and Which Certification Is Right for You?

MEGAFORMER

To the uninitiated, a Megaformer and a Pilates Reformer look similar. Both use spring resistance, a sliding carriage and straps. Both attract premium clients. But the similarities end there — and if you are considering a career as a fitness instructor, understanding the difference is essential to choosing the right certification.

What Is a Reformer? Classical Precision and Rehabilitation

The Pilates Reformer is the original spring-resistance apparatus, developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Classical Reformer Pilates is built around exercises designed to develop postural alignment, core strength and body awareness through flowing, controlled movement.

Reformer Pilates is fundamentally therapeutic. It is widely used in rehabilitation settings, with post-natal clients and for corrective movement work. As an instructor, your role is highly technical — requiring deep anatomy knowledge, movement assessment skills and individual client programming.

What Is a Megaformer? High-Intensity Evolution

The Megaformer was developed by Sebastien Lagree as a purpose-built apparatus for the Lagree method — a fundamentally different approach. Where classical Pilates prioritises precision and rehabilitation, Lagree prioritises sustained time under tension, metabolic conditioning and muscular endurance.

The Megaformer is physically larger than a Reformer, with more spring configurations and specific platforms built for the Lagree exercise library. It is designed for an intensity that classical Reformers were never built to deliver.

Which Certification Should You Choose?

Choose Reformer Pilates certification if you are drawn to one-to-one client work, rehabilitation and the classical movement tradition. It opens doors in physiotherapy clinics, private studios and luxury wellness retreats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions Answered

Is Lagree the same as Pilates?

No. While both use spring-resistance equipment, Lagree and Pilates are distinct methods. Lagree uses the Megaformer and prioritises high-intensity, sustained time under tension. Reformer Pilates focuses on alignment, flow and rehabilitation.

Which is harder — Lagree or Reformer Pilates?

Lagree is generally more physically intense due to sustained time under tension and metabolic demands. Reformer Pilates can be equally challenging technically, requiring precision of movement rather than endurance.

Can I teach both Lagree and Reformer Pilates?

Yes — and many instructors do. Core Wellness Academy offers both certifications, allowing you to build a dual-qualified profile that significantly increases your employability and earning potential.

Which certification is faster to complete?

Lagree Level 01 is a 3-day intensive workshop. Reformer Pilates certification is typically longer. Both require ongoing teaching hours to build real competency.
